Stormwater Division is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of Miami Gardens’ Stormwater System. The Stormwater Division also administers the City of Miami Gardens Stormwater Utility Program. Stormwater Management is a state and federally mandated program requiring the City to reduce pollution in City of Miami Gardens waterways. The program is entirely funded by stormwater fees based on the total amount of impervious surface (e.g. buildings, driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.) on properties in Miami Gardens.
The Stormwater Management Division is comprised of seven sections. Each section is responsible for specific tasks related to stormwater management.
•Division Management Team implements and manages the Stormwater Program and supports the efforts of the Stormwater Management Program.
•Stormwater Administration Section is the primary point of contact for customers requesting stormwater information, posing drainage questions, requesting credits, and making drainage complaints. They administer the City’s Drainage Assistance Policy which helps private property owners with issues involving structural flooding and severe erosion.
•Stormwater Services Section analyzes, designs, and oversees the construction of stormwater devices and structures identified in the City’s capital improvements plan (CIP).
•Water Quality Section coordinates Miami Gardens’ National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase I program. The section’s focus on water quality includes collecting and analyzing surface water quality samples for contaminants, locating and eliminating illicit discharges, implementing engineering practices to improve the quality of stormwater runoff, and educating citizens on pollution issues challenging the City.
•Infrastructure Management Section locates and maps stormwater structures in the City’s 20 square mile jurisdiction. This section assists other City departments with maintenance of the City’s public drainage system (typically located under public streets).
•Development Plan Review Engineering Section reviews development plans for compliance of floodplain, and peak runoff control regulations. The section reviews plans from preliminary stage to permit issuance to construction drawing approval. Manages the City’s floodplain program.
•Development Plan Review Inspections Section enforces the City’s Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Ordinance, Flood Prone Area Regulations, and Stormwater Control and Watercourse Buffer Regulations.
