1. How often does an officer train with their canines?

As often as they are able to but they are required to train at least once a week.

2. Are the canines trained to be vicious?

No, they are trained to follow the command of their master, (the handler). They are very loving and you can ask the handler permission to pet them.

3. How old are the canines when they begin their training as a K-9 officer?

The training begins when the canine is a puppy and it usually takes up to a year, when they are considered an adult canine, to be fully trained.

4. Where do you get the canines from?

Our canines are often German Shepard or Belgian Malinois and are sometimes donated by citizens and/ business owners or purchased directly by the Department.

5. Where do the canine go when they reach retirement age?

The K-9 handler has the option of keeping the canine as a pet or finding another good home for the canine.
